A Visit From the Tooth Fairy: An Assessment

Well. It FINALLY happened. Poor little Porter has been waiting and waiting for his teeth to start falling out! He is now closer to 7 than 6, and all his classmates are well on their way! Turns out, there was a reason his were taking a while. He is one of the lucky few who started growing shark teeth. I mean, his two bottom middle teeth have been working their way in BEHIND his baby teeth, instead of underneath. Our dentist friend told us that this is somewhat common. I guess there is an enzyme from the big teeth that is supposed to dissolve the root of the baby tooth as it pushes it's way up and thus, the baby teeth just fall out. Being that they were coming in behind, instead of underneath the root was still pretty long, and the teeth stayed put. After realizing the situation, we want to help get those teeth out as soon as possible. That way his tounge can start to push the big teeth forward where they are supposed to be. Porter wiggled his tooth. A lot.
We helped wiggle his tooth.
We tried to pull his tooth.
It didn't want to come.
It was in there pretty tight.
If they didn't/don't come out soon the alternative is to take him to the dentist, get a shot, and get them pulled.
Needless to say, Porter is not a fan of that option.

So he kept wiggling. and wiggling. Then one morning while brushing his teeth it happened! Yay! It popped out with the force of his toothbrush!
One down, one to go! (Both big teeth are coming in)

For the big visit from the Tooth Fairy Porter was very logical. He had heard thru others that sometimes, if you are lucky the Tooth Fairy might bring you something other than money. Perhaps a small toy, or a certificate for more tv time, etc. He decided that he wanted something else too apparently. We told him, that the Tooth Fairy wouldn't know on the first visit though that he wanted alternate payment for his tooth. We told him he would need to write her a note. Also, he thought his tooth was cool, and really wanted to keep it.
Right before bed, when I asked if he put his tooth under his pillow he said no. I asked why. Porter, always the thinker, said "Why does the tooth fairy want to have to lift up my pillow with me sleeping on it, and dig around to find the tooth? It seems like a much better plan to just put it next to my bed so she can find it easily. Don't you think Mom?" I do indeed buddy. I do indeed. So that's what he did. The tooth fairy did bring him money this time, but will probably bring another treat next time we think. Also, much to his satisfaction he also got to keep his tooth!

So finally. My first baby has lost his first tooth. It's all downhill from here I suppose. sob. sob. He's really growing up, despite my best efforts to stop him.
Congrats anyway buddy!
