Quite the President

The other day we decided to take advantage of some GORGEOUS weather and hit another thing on my "must see" list. I really have knocked off most things, but the FDR Memorial was still just sitting there tempting me. It is somewhat close to the rest of the memorials, yet just far enough away that it was the one that kept getting skipped when we were all tuckered out for the day in any previous sight-seeing trips we have taken! We loaded into the car and zipped downtown! We found a great parking spot in the shade. It was sunny and breezy. Perfect for strolling around with nothing else on our agenda. I must say, this might be one of my new favorites. We were actually pretty spoiled though, it was fairly empty- so having it much to ourselves made it that much more peaceful. It was much larger and prettier than I had expected. All the water features were beautiful and Porter just loved to sit and watch them.

I knew that FDR was a president like no other; in length (4 terms), challenges of his Presidency (Great Depression, World War II etc.), being disabled, etc. He truly accomplished so much and lead the American people through some of the biggest challenges we have ever faced. Being surrounded by so many inspiring quotes that were on the walls throughout the memorial really makes you realize that he was quite the President! He had so many truly inspiring quotes. I don't know if it was really him, or his speech writers, but whoever came up with the things he said was genius.

This was one of my favorites, but there were tons of great ones. It is a great memorial to make you sit and think about all of our blessings.

Lastly, we had to get the great "tourist" photo of the kiddos in the breadline. Now we know that Ronan is a cutter in lines. He refused to stand at the back of the line with Porter. We'll have to work on that.
We had a really nice time as a family, and tried to use the opportunity to explain to the kids some of this important history. Hopefully with things like this to experience as they grow up it will all sink in and inspire them to stand up for what is right in the world. A good day. Hopefully many more to come like this.

This is by far our favorite place to go in DC. I can't believe that I never took you there while we were there. It is awesome. I am glad we have such similar taste.
